AWANA

AWANA is a global ministry dedicated to the discipleship of children and has programs in over 47,000 churches around the world. It seeks to reach children through Scripture-rich experiences that teach them to know Him, love Him, and serve Him. The letters of AWANA stand for Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed from 2 Timothy 2:15 which states: "Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." The program is based heavily on Scripture memorization and encourages children to seek out Scripture to better understand God and His truths.

Somerset Baptist Church has clubs for Pre-K 3 through 8th grade. Currently, we do not have an AWANA high school class however those who are interested are more than welcome to attend the youth classes. All age groups meet on Sunday evenings from 4 pm to 6 pm. We run from September to May every year.

Children's Ministry

Our primary ministry for children at  Somerset Baptist Church is Sunday School classes for children 3 years old through the 5th grade. Those classes meet from 9:45 am to 10:45 am.

We have a nursery available for infants and children 2 years old during the Sunday School hour. The nursery is fully staffed with paid and volunteer workers. The nursery is also available for children from birth to 3 years old during the 11:00 am service. There is currently no nursery service available for the 8:30 am service..

Somerset Baptist Church offers various events throughout the year including Vacation Bible School (VBS), Summer Camp, Easter Egg Hunt, Trunk or Treat, monthly Family Movie Nights, and much more!

Youth Ministry

Our youth ministry strives to educate and equip our youth with the tools necessary to spiritually survive in today's world.  It is our goal that our youth be able to withstand the pressures of this world rather than conform to the sins of the world by teaching them to understand faith and why they believe what they do.  In order to stand strong, our youth must be equipped with the tools necessary to do so. We do this through various events throughout the year including Sunday School, Wednesday evening Bible study, Summer Camp, Outreach Events, and many more. As a church, we feel it is our responsibility to come alongside parents and help disciple their children in knowing what the Bible teaches about relationships with the Lord and each other as well as serving.

Youth Sunday School

Our Youth Sunday School classes meet in our upstairs classrooms from 9:45 am to 10:45 am. Our youth classes include all youth from 6th grade to 12th grade. During this hour, we start with large group teaching and then break into smaller groups.

Youth Wednesday Night Bible Study

On Wednesday nights our youth Bible Study- 6th grade to 12th grade-meets in the Ark from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm. We start our evenings by filling our youth’s stomachs to make way for feeding their minds. Each week, we will feed them a variety of food such as nachos, pulled pork, spaghetti, and other teen favorites.

At 7:00 pm, we start our large group teaching, focusing on what the Bible says. At 7:30 pm, our kids break into small groups which allows our leaders time to invest in each of the students individually. This allows time to talk about what’s going on in their lives, how they can be prayed for, and how they see God moving in the day-to-day schedule. It’s essential that our students learn to use a Bible (not just the app) so we have been working on the organization of it and where things are located. Beginning June 8, 2022, we will begin a study on the book of Romans.

Adult Bible Study - Sunday School

We offer many different adult Bible Study classes on Sunday mornings at 9:45 am for adults of all ages and walks of life, from seniors in college to seniors in life. Please call the church office if you'd like assistance finding a class that is right for you.

Small Groups

Small groups are intentional gatherings of people who meet regularly for the purpose of joining God’s mission. Small Group Bible Studies meet in area homes or the church and are just that—a small group agreeing to share life together and form spiritual habits to grow in Christ. It is a wonderful time of fellowship as well as great Bible study in a more casual setting. It also gives you the opportunity to develop relationships with others in the group. These small groups meet throughout the year and cover various topical Bible studies and/or books. Please call the church office to find out more information on the different small groups and to find one for you and your family to join.

Ladies Only

The ladies' group meets on Tuesday mornings from 10:00 am to 11:30 am in the Ark. The group meets in the summer, fall, and spring with the express purpose of digging deep into Scripture, encouraging one another, holding each other accountable, and lifting each other up in prayer. The next study begins June 14 and will run through July 26. We will be doing a video study by Jennifer Rothschild entitled “Take Courage: A Study of Haggai.” The cost of the book is $20. For more information or to sign up, please text or call Karen at 713-213-8161.

Tuesday Evening

The Tuesday evening group meets at 6:30 pm at the church and is for anyone that is interested. During the Spring 2022 semester, the Tuesday evening class dug into the Seven Churches of Revelation by David Jeremiah. The Fall dates and study will be announced in early August.

Thursday Evening

The Thursday evening group is also for anyone interested and meets in an area home from 6:30-8:00 pm. During the Spring 2022 session, the Thursday evening class studied and discussed “Counter Culture” by David Platt. The Fall dates and study will be announced in early August.

Golden Oldies

The Golden Oldies ministry meets every fourth Friday of the month at 10:30 am and is for retired adults, although all ages are welcome to attend. The ministry invites local musical talent to come and lead in a time of worship and entertainment. In many ways, it is a mini-concert by those who have been invited to perform. Those who attend are asked to bring a lunch potluck item to share. Drinks are provided by the church. We invite everyone who is able to come and be a part of this event. Fun, food, and fellowship all in one setting!! Can't ask for much more than that!!

Women on Mission

Our Women on Mission (aka Women's Missionary Union) is for women of all ages and is a ministry focused on helping to reach the lost. The women meet monthly and plan various outreach activities to help spread the Gospel of Christ in our community.
